Candles
Candles lend a special light to Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, Menorahs, and Kwaanza Kinaras, as well as set just the right mood for listening to that new music. They're also the leading cause of on- and off-campus residential fires.
Do:
- Buy candles in non-tipping, non-flammable holders (jars) and remove any labels or tags.
- Position candles on stable, heat resistant surfaces.
- Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets (who can inadvertently knock them over).
- When extinguishing a candle, snuff the flame by wetting the wick.
Don't:
- Leave burning candles unattended.
- Burn a candle near a window or exit where a breeze or draft can knock it over or into something flammable.
- Position candles near flammable liquids (this includes aerosol hair spray cans) or materials like curtains and posters.
